Your brain is in charge of you. All your decisions, emotions, personality, likes and dislikes are managed by the brain. It takes care of everything – lets you know when something hurts, alerts you to danger, releases all those happy hormones when you see someone you love, makes you function as a human being every day.

So it’s incredibly important to keep your brain healthy. There are countless studies that show that taking care of your brain can help to significantly reduce your chances of getting diseases like alzheimer’s. Like all the muscles in your body, the brain need to be used in order to stay strong and healthy.

But all our brains are different. Some people are naturally good at math, some need to sleep a bit later, some are really good at picking up on other people’s emotions and so on. We all have incredibly unique and wonderfully complicated brains which means that they all need to be taken care of in unique ways. Here are some of the most important things to remember for brain health depending on your biotype:

Ectomorph

– Having a mission is super important. Know why you’re doing something and what it will achieve. The bigger the mission, the bigger the drive to achieve. The more success, the better you feel naturally. A sense of accomplishment is important for your brain’s natural function.

– Snack on nuts that contain plenty of oleic acid to protect the myelin sheath, like pecans, almonds, macadamia nuts. Other beneficial fats like oily fish, avocado and olive oil help too.

– Avoid too many neural stimulants like msg, refined sugar and focus more on slow-release carbs that feed your brain like whole grains.

– Be wary of stress. For you, stress takes the biggest toll on your mind so make sure to make time for quiet alone time where you can reflect and calm your mind.

Mesomorph

– Be active because if you’re bored you’ll start creating problems just to have something to do or solve. As a natural problem solver and doer, your body likes to get things done and the more things you can check off your to-do list, the more you feel naturally rewarded for your achievements.

– But don’t spread yourself too thin. You may want to do many things and have much on your plate that you can be proud of, but overdoing it can take a toll on your body.

– You need rest at the end of a hard day or week. Schedule it in, take time off, respect your sleep cycle. Though you may find you can resist the stress now, it will get you in the end and increase your aging faster than other body types.

– Include lots of anti-inflammatory foods in your diet.

– Get plenty of exercise as it oxygenates the body and brain and releases tension and stress, especially for mesomorphs.

Endomorph

– You need plenty of time in the morning and a full night’s sleep. This is incredibly important for your brain function. Where other body types can funcion well on less sleep and/or early mornings, you will only be doing yourself harm. Slow and steady is the way to go.

– Take your time with food because stress and fast eating can disrupt your digestive process. Make sure you schedule specific meal times and take as long as you can to eat.

– A heart-healthy diet is also a brain-healthy diet so get plenty of omega 3 fatty acids, keep the trans fats and processed foods low, and don’t overdo the refined sugars that are irritants to the nervous system.

– Look for stability and predictability. Your mind doesn’t cope well with chaos in your environment so plan ahead and nurture your relationships with your friends and family.

On top of these individualised tips, some brain health practises that are important for everyone are:

  1. Getting plenty of sleep – your brain needs time to process and rest.
  2. Keeping hydrated – water is an important conductor for the brain.
  3. Diet – eat the best foods for your unique body but beware of extremes. Carb and sugar free diets aren’t good for the brain because it needs them for energy, so provide your body with the healthiest natural sources of carbs and sugars.

It’s important to give your brain the kind of care and attention that is best for its unique needs. Keeping that and these basic tips that are relevant for everyone in mind will ensure you have a super-brain well into your old age!
