Inspiration

I love being in nature. It relaxes me, inspires me and calms my mind and restless spirit. If I had a few less commitments, I would spend more time hiking, sitting by lakes and rivers, kayaking and camping. But I know enough about myself to know that when I am stressed, a little time spent in nature will make me feel well again.

Demands, stress, worries and fatigue can all bring down our moods and weaken the great power available to our minds. It is up to us to find the activities, people and daily habits that inspire us to feel excited about life, motivated to fulfill our responsibilities and show up as our best self for our family and commitments.

Now is as good of time as any to make a list of daily habits that you can do to refresh your mind and body when the pressure of life feels taxing. Here are just a few ideas:

  • Read a good book
  • Take a bath
  • Go for a walk in nature
  • Meditate
  • Listen to soothing music
  • Dance to your favorite music
  • Cuddle with your partner, child or pet
  • Eat a healthy snack while sitting out on the patio watching the birds
  • Draw, paint or write a poem
  • Ride your bike
  • Take a nap

There are many things we can do to calm the mind. Everyone has different preferences. Some people might want to ride a horse and others may want to race a car. The key is to find time to work the activities that your mind enjoys into your routine so they don’t get left out do to other obligations. We need reprieve to function at our best, be that exercise, art or good conversation; whether in nature, your favorite restaurant or in your man cave. Take the time to satisfy the needs of your brain, because, after all, it does run the show. If the intellect is neglected, every part of you will suffer.
