For most people Independence Day brings to mind lovely warm weather, the smell of barbecue, the sounds of laughter and joy that come with spending time with loved ones, and the sounds and sights of fireworks. There is a sense of freedom that comes with being able to spend time outdoors in mild weather. The freedom of a day off work. The freedom of being able to be yourself around your friends and family. The freedom to enjoy the more lighthearted aspects of life.

Ultimately, that’s what the 4th of July is really about, isn’t it? Freedom. It is celebrated to commemorate the US claiming independence from Britain. It is the day that America became ‘land of the free and home of the brave’. So it is only fitting that it is celebrated each year with a sense of freedom and joy by all of us.

So what does all this have to do with food?

Well, as has become popular around this time of year, there are plenty of articles on ‘How to Make Your 4th of July BBQ Healthier’ and ‘Healthy Food Alternatives for Independence Day’. Much of this is very helpful, well-researched advice, and is readily available online.

What we would like to talk about is how you can exercise your God given rights to freedom, as an American, all year round. You see, every day of your life you have the freedom to choose.

You can choose to eat junk or you can choose to eat well.

You can choose to educate yourself about what is best for you as an individual – and technology like ph360 and ShaeTM make it easy.

You can choose to put your health, and that of your family, first.

That’s the beauty of living in the best country in the world – you have the freedom of choice.

And once you have made that brave choice, and you embrace a healthy lifestyle, you start to become aware of a whole other kind of freedom as well. The freedom that comes with a healthy body, mind and spirit. The freedom of movement, the freedom of clarity of thought, the freedom of increased energy. The freedom of being your true, best self.

So get out there and be brave and free. There is no better way to honor your country. Happy Independence Day!
