Detox Foods: Is Broccoli Your Bestie..?
Our dear friend Broccoli…
Recently, broccoli has been the subject of many papers on cancer prevention, along with being heralded as a super detox vegetable because of it’s liver support function.. So should we all be munching down as much green as we can get..?
Well, we know that Broccoli can help keep the cardiovascular system healthy, thanks to its kaempferol content (a cardioprotective flavonoid) and it is a very nutritious vegetable that is low in calories. Including the stalks! They are full of vitamin C and contain plenty of folate, potassium and manganese. (Don’t hesitate to remove the hard fibrous outer layer of broccoli stems, cut the fleshy inner layer into pieces, and add it to a stir fry or any other broccoli dish. De-lish!) 🙂
But, like our buddy cabbage, broccoli is another cruciferous vegetable and, in high quantities, it can lower the activity of that darned Thyroid which, for some people in the long run, can lead to weight gain, lethargy, depression and fatigue. Not exactly what we would be hoping for from a Detox..
So be sure to check in with what YOUR body needs before your Detox (and at any other time too!)!
All of the vegetables we’ve mentioned this week are merely vegetables – yes, glorious pieces of wonderful plant food, but just vegetables. They are not ‘good’ or ‘bad’, they’re not ‘super foods’ or the ‘only foods we should eat’.. remember, every food interacts with your body in a different way – and that’s what counts so just choose what’s right for YOU!
